Frequently Asked Questions

Is Telemedicine Safe? +
Yes — all consultations are conducted by registered NZ specialists using secure, encrypted platforms that meet strict healthcare privacy standards.
Can Prescriptions Be Issued? +
Yes, if clinically appropriate, your specialist can send prescriptions electronically to your pharmacy.
What If I Need a Physical Examination? +
Your specialist will refer you for an in person appointment if a physical examination is necessary for your care.
Can I Use Health Insurance? +
Most major NZ insurers cover telehealth consultations. We recommend checking with your provider before booking to confirm coverage.
How Do I Upload Scans or Reports? +
Our secure portal lets you upload files directly before your appointment. All documents are encrypted and stored safely.
What Devices Can I Use? +
You can join your consultation from any smartphone, tablet, or computer with a working camera, microphone, and internet connection.
Can I have a scan done locally? +
Absolutely. We can arrange MRI, CT, ultrasound, and X-ray requests at any accredited imaging provider across New Zealand, whichever is most convenient for you. Results are sent directly to your specialist and discussed with you at your followup consultation.
Can I have blood tests done locally? +
Yes. We issue laboratory forms that can be used at any community collection centre (Labtests, Awanui/Medlab, Pathlab, Southern Community Laboratories). Results are sent electronically to your specialist.
How do I book an appointment? +
Appointments can be booked directly through our website or by phoning our support team. You'll receive a confirmation email with your appointment time, video link, and any preconsultation paperwork.
What happens during the consultation? +
Your specialist will take a detailed history, review any scans or reports you've provided, and discuss diagnosis and a management plan. You'll receive a written summary after the consultation, and a letter will be sent to your GP (with your consent).
How long is each consultation? +
First appointments are typically 45–60 minutes depending on the specialty. Followup appointments are usually 20–30 minutes.
Is my information confidential? +
Yes. All consultations take place on a secure, encrypted platform. Your clinical records are stored in compliance with the Health Information Privacy Code 2020 and the Privacy Act 2020, and are never shared without your explicit consent.
Do I need a GP referral? +
Referral requirements vary by specialist and by the nature of your concern. Please check with our team when booking — we'll confirm whether a referral is needed for your specific appointment. If you already have a referral or recent clinical letters, uploading them when booking helps your specialist prepare. We also strongly encourage keeping your GP informed of your care, and with your consent we'll send them a copy of your consultation letter.
What if I have a technical problem during my consultation? +
Our support team is available to help with any technical issues. If the video connection fails, your specialist will call you by phone and continue the consultation that way.
Can I get a second opinion through NZ TeleMed? +
Yes. Many patients use us specifically for specialist second opinions. You can upload existing scans, reports, and clinical letters for your specialist to review before the consultation.
Can family members join the consultation? +
Yes. With your permission, family members, support people, or caregivers can join the video consultation from the same device or a separate location — useful for patients who prefer having a partner, adult child, or advocate present.
Is telemedicine available outside New Zealand? +
Our specialists are registered to practice in New Zealand, so consultations are generally for patients currently located in New Zealand. Travelling patients should contact us to discuss their specific situation.
What if I need to see a specialist in person? +
If your specialist determines that an in person review is clinically necessary, they'll arrange an appropriate referral — either to their own private clinic, a colleague in your region, or through the public system depending on urgency and your preference.
How do I cancel or reschedule? +
Appointments can be cancelled or rescheduled through our website or by contacting our support team. We ask for at least 24 hours' notice where possible.
What does it cost? +
Consultation fees vary by specialty and appointment length. Full pricing is shown at the time of booking, with no hidden charges. Consultations may be eligible for partial or full reimbursement through private health insurance.
Is telemedicine suitable for my condition? +
Most specialist consultations that don't require physical examination are well suited to telemedicine. If your condition isn't appropriate for a virtual consultation, our team will let you know before booking and help arrange suitable alternative care.
